Full Description

Deep storm trenching in Whitehall Close in December 1951 revealed a section of Roman Watling Street, aligned SE-NW, observed by Frank Jenkins. As seen in section the gravel metalling averaged 1ft 6 in thick and rested upon an occupation deposit dated by the pottery it contained as not later than the mid first century AD. At a point, 75ft short of the fence bounding the railway cutting close to the north edge of the road was a burial containing a few pieces of calcined bone. It is possible that the burial belongs to a date, which is just pre-Roman.
