Full Description

Between 1956 and 1959 Frank Jenkins, of the Canterbury Excavation Committee, conducted the digging of several archaeological trenches in the Whitehall Road area during construction of a new road (Rheims Way). The trenches were coded CXXVI W VI .

The excavation provided good evidence for Belgic occupation. Squares A-I were opened during 1956 and features recorded included at least five pits of 'Belgic'/mid-late 1st century date, a small oven and a small pit of burnt bones of similar date, a beam slot, two rectangular gravel features of late 1st/early 2nd century date and a pottery kiln of mid 2nd century date producing mica-dusted face-urns and pinched lip flagons.

Squares J-R were opened in 1957 and squares S-ZA were opened in 1959 exposing a complex series of post holes and beam slots forming part of the 'Belgic' period occupation.

One source states that a late inhumation burial was found.
