Full Description
Between April and October 1990 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust began excavation on a large site at the Longmarket, in the centre of Canterbury to the south of the Cathedral precincts. The work was undertaken in advance of major redevelopment and was funded by Land Securities Plc. The sitecode was LM90.
The excavated area was on the southern end of the redevelopment site and was c. 40x30m. In addition to the excavation all the cellars along Butchery Lane were emptied and excavated down to natural brickearth. The earliest finds were some poorly preserved 'Belgic' and early Roman structures.
Also during the winter of 1945-46 excavations by the Canterbury Excavations Committee in cellars on the south side of Butchery Lane discovered, in addition to Roman and later evidence, in cellar F shaloow post-holes associated with pre Roman Belgic pottery sherds, the post-holes were cut into the natural Brickearth.
