Full Description
In 1980 and 1981 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated on adjacent sites at 69a Stour Street and Adelaide Place. The work was partially funded by the developer, Pipers, and grants were also received from the Society of Antiquaries of London, D. O. E. and the Kent Archaeological Society. The sitecodes were CB/RIV and CB/RV.
The excavation revealed a number of pre Roman Belgic/Roman features and deposits. The earliest deposit was one of Belgic where the lowest level of pebbles was strewn with Belgic occupation debris and was cut by 3 mid 1st century ovens/kilns. A dump of brickearth sealed these early deposits, which in turn by a layer of rammed gravel, laid c. 70-80 AD. Associated with the gravel layer was a narrow street, barely 2m wide, aligned roughly NW/SE. A second road, at right angles to the first, was also found and presumed to be contemporary. Both roads were sealed by further dump deposits.
