Full Description
Quote from Archaeological survey: "Barn. 2 phases: south end is probably 16th century or 17th century but main part rebuilt in the late 18th century-early 19th century incorporating reused timbers. Weatherboarded timber framing on red brick footings; corrugated iron roof, formely thatch according to the farmer, hipped both ends. Aisled barn with 2 threshing floors forming the west side of the yard close to the farmhouse. It faces east to the yard. Barn is dominated by its uneven roof which hips down at ridge level from the taller southern end to the main body. Southern threshing floor in second bay from south and second threshing floor in northern bay. Both have full height front doorways in midstrey proches with low monopitch roofs and contain double doors under top-hung flaps (the right - northern - one older than the other). A 20th century corrugated iron leanto between the midstrey doors. Left (south) end has 20th century pedestrian door and single pane window. Another 20th century to right of the northern doorway and 2 more in north end wall (both horizontal fixed pane with glazing bars). At rear most wall towards north blown down in 1987. buth southern low still standing. Inside most of wall framing is later - slender scantling with straight tension braces - but storm damage. Northern open truss and end normal assembly passing shoresm braces to arcade plate collared trusses with clasped purlins and windbraces. Rest of structure uses many similar timbers but here low shores, straight and relatively slender arch braces and here roof has raking queen struts to the purlins. Truss north of centre (numbered III) looks very much like an adaptaion of the older type. North end bay floored in 20th century." (1)
