Full Description
Reference from Archaeological Survey: "Barn with separate floored end. Probably 16th century with various 19th century and 20th century accretions around (small late 19th century brick engine house to north, probably 19th century animal house front west - front rebuilt in 20th century and henhouses - and small late 19th century brick implement shed on southwest corner). English bond red brick with pegtile roof (maybe thatch originally). Large aisled barn terraced to hillslope on east-west axis facing south, 7 bays in all with end aisles. Original brick crosswall divides off east 2 bays which were floored from the beginning. 5-bay barn section has central threshing floor with only front doorway - large double doorway, (20th century plank doors) and a small pedestrian door alongside; roof lifts over the large doorway. The walls are plastered inside and much of the front is hidden by plaster inside later buildings. However front doorway flanked by large brick raking buttresses (very early if not original) and it appears that there were originally 3 breathers to each bay including the floored end section and 4 more breathers in the east end wall. Rear includes 5 original round-headed windows, one to the floored end and 4 to the main barn (2 are blocked). Unclear whether floored end had original external access - front door inserted or remodelled and the end door uncertain. Original central door connects floored end and main barn, flanked by small triangular-headed wall niches. Loft carried on 2 axial beams which also carry posts which support the end aisle roof structure. Fine roof with slightly flared aisle posts, curving arch braces to tie and aisle and upbraces to crown purlin (see sketch elevation). One post in barn, south side, east bay, has 2 atch- braces to arcade. Crosswall to tie level with infill grille of staves above." (1)
