Full Description

Reputed semi-underground hangar dating to First World War, shown on OS map. A 2008 desk-based assessment identified a possible First World War structure at Cheeseman's Farm. No further information is available and it is possible that the structure may have been confused with the ancient earthwork. (1)

The earthwork banks forming part of a hangar of First World War date were visible as earthworks in RAF/HLA/564 V 6012 01-JUN-1942. The hangar stood at Cheeseman's Farm on the south-east side of Alland Grange Lane. By the time of that photography, the remains of the hangar comprised the two flanking banks of spoil dug out during the excavation of the below-ground hangar. The site had been adapted for later and Second World War use. Those later features are recorded separately.

A number of semi-sunken hangars were constructed in 1918 to serve RAF Manston. The sites of four can be confirmed by aerial evidence. This hangar stood just to the north of the one at Alland Grange. Two more, either side of Manston Road on the north side of RAF Manston, were not completed. Photographs of the hangars under construction, including at least one that had been completed, are on display in the RAF Manston History Museum.

This site was recorded as levelled earthworks in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021 was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (2-4)
