Full Description

Hut 1 was trapezoidal; 6.7m long and 3.04m across at its narrow end, widening out to c.4.87m. It was sunk c.30cm into the destruction layers of the Roman building and into a large rubbish pit which produced 5 late third-century coins; Tetricus I 270-273; Radiate 260-280; Barbarous radiates (three) 270-290; and a number of sherds of late fourth century pottery. The south-west and south-east of the hut, which were marked by a series of postholes, were clearly seen; the other two sides were only partly preserved because of disturbance by medieval pits.

The postholes around which the wall was contrcuted were at c.90cm. Intervals with many smaller holes c.2-7cm. In diameter and 10-15cm. Deep in between for wattles.

The hut floor consisted of thin, very uneven pebbly mortar; in the south-east and south-west corners the pebbles had been trodden more firmly into the underlying surface as though the ground was wet and sticky.

Two hearths were discovered on the surface of the floor. Hearth 1 consisted of a small pit, c.20cm deep and lined with thick burnt clay. It may have been secondary, being constructed on the top of Pit 4, an Anglo Saxon pit which yielded two mid seventh-century rim sherds. The pit lay entirely within the hut and may have been dug early in its occupation before being filled in and succeeded by the hearth; alternatively it may predate the hut entirely. Hearth 2 lay on the surface of the floor.

Eventually the hut was burnt down.
