Monument record TR 15 NW 1938 - Anglo-Saxon Hut 4 Simon Langton Yard

Summary

Cut into by Medieval pits, and walls largely indistinct. The floor, however, was, in parts, better preserved then in the other huts and there were definite signs of a secondary surface. Primary floor was formed of Roman Mortar and loam and this was overlaid by a thin layer of occupation earth. Several hearths were found and there was a scatter of charcoal and red flecks from these on the floors.

Full Description

Cut into by Medieval pits, and walls largely indistinct. The floor, however, was, in parts, better preserved then in the other huts and there were definite signs of a secondary surface. Primary floor was formed of Roman Mortar and loam and this was overlaid by a thin layer of occupation earth. Several hearths were found and there was a scatter of charcoal and red flecks from these on the floors.

Hearth 1 was an elongated hole measuring 1.47m by 68 cm at its widest point and was lined with yellow loam and charcoal. Hearth 3 was similar and probably succeeded Hearth 1. A few large charcoal twigs were found around the sides and at the bottom was a small, presumably pre-hearth, stake-hole. This hearth seems to have been little used before being filled with grey occupation earth. Hearth 2 in which 2 roman coins (Commodus 180-92 and House of Constantine 350-60) were found together with an Anglo-Saxon sherd, was probably the latest of the 3 hearths. It was a shallow scoop filled with greyish occupation earth, mixed with ash and charcoal. The sides and bottom showed little sign of burning. The huts destruction layers had been largely destroyed in the medieval period, but burnt daub and charcoal indicate a final conflagation.
