Full Description
Only one structure of this date. Clay lined cellar situated in palaestra of the Roman Baths.
Good state of preservation, only part disturbed by later pits. The cellar cut 1.4 , into Roman levels. Large postholes were located, five along the sides and six along the shorter sides, a small seventh post-hole on the north east side probably represented a later replacement. A large central post was incorporated, probably to help support a floor a little above the contemporary ground surface. Around the perimeter of the cellar base were stakeholes approximately 25cm apart, and between the row of postholes and stake holes was a remarkably well preserved clay lining, surviving to a height of 91cm in the south-west corner. On the rear of the clay was noted the marks of horizontal withies, long since decayed , which were woven between the stakes. A clay floor covered the central area, bounded by wicker lining, and overlay a foundation deposit of greenish-yellow sand and clay containing tile, flint and opus signinum fragments. One patch of orange burning on the clay floor presumably indicated the position of a subsequently decayed hearth.
Pottery suggests the structure was in use c.925-975
A scatter of post holes surrounding S29 could possibly represent part of a large timber structure measuring 9.5m x4.5m with cellar S29 at one end. Later disturbance make it difficult to envisage the plan. From the existing post-holes one may postulate that there were four posts along either side of the building and three at each end. Post-holes were a little over 3m apart along the length of the structure. One replacement post was located at the south-west end, whilst a cluster of post-holes on the south-east side is difficult to interpret. Some of these may well pre-date or even post date the structure since there was a lack of Anglo-Saxon stratigraphy in this area of the site.
