Full Description
The trench was dug in order to test for the edge of an EW street found in a previous excavation in 1947. Two successive late Saxon floors were found overlying remains of a Roman timber building consisting of a sleeper beam trench and a gravel floor. The natural brickearth was seen to lie at a level of c. 12 OD and was sealed by a layer of loamy soil containing small chalk lumps and Belgic sherds; and interpreted as pre-Roman plough soil.
Cellar CI lying north to the area investigated in 1949 revelaed a Saxon occupation layer resting on a substantial floor of gravel and cobbles. This layer sealed a thick layer of dark earth, thought to as a result of cultivation, sealing late Roman levels and the remains of earlier Roman buildings.
The last area to be investigate, C VI, was excavated south west of Trench CII and was found to be riddled with deep 18th century and earlier pist but traces of the Saxon floor were found. Beneath this was found 23cm of late Roman black earth beneath which was a cobbled floor. The Saxon floor, if continuous, appears to cover an area at least 18.9m by 20.1m.
