Full Description
In 1924, R. U. Potts, subwarden of St Augustine's College, excavated in the south aisle of the Nave of St Augustine's Abbey as well as the south transept, the west tower and Royal Tombs.
In the south aisle, a Saxon burial cross was uncovered with the remains of a broken leaden box. The cross was inscribed thus 'On the eleventh of March 1063 departed out of this life Wlfmaeg sister of Wlfric the Abbot' 'By this sign of Christ all the resting places (are blessed?)' This was the earliest dated relic to be found within the Abbey.
In the western tower seven graves were uncovered with some childrens graves. The adult graves were empty and it is possible they were temporary in nature. Against the south wall of the south transept four graves were found, one bore the inscription 'Here lies Lotharius, King of the English. He died on Feb 6th in the year 685'. Another proclaimed 'Here lies Wihtred, king of the English. He died on April 24 in the year 725'. It is thought the four graves had been relocated in the 12th century.
In the centre of the south transept was the base of a table tomb which appeared to have no grave beneath it. There were also three tombs in a row in the north-west corner of the transept and an unidentified double grave on the north side of St Anne's Chapel. (1, 2)
