Full Description
In 1980 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated upon the site of the present 1-2 Marlowe Arcade prior to redevelopment. The sitecode was MIV and the work was undertaken prior to development.
A total of eleven structures were then built in the area in the Saxon period (c AD 450-700), all cutting 'dark earth' generated during the post Roman abandonment. A number of associated features such as wells, pits, hearths and post holes were also found. These all suggested prolonged Anglo-Saxon occupation from around 450 AD onwards.
A gap of 100-150 years was then noticable in the evidence of activity on the site, subsequently a large, lined pit was dug on the site with ten post holes dug around its perimeter. The function of the pit was not determined. Pits continued to be dug on the site into the 11th century, one of which was found to contain tap slag. The Roman buildings were also robbed for their stone throughout this time.
In April 1951 a trench was dug by The Canterbury Excavation Committee and was coded CXIX EVIII.
An Anglo-Saxon sunken featured building was discovered in the central part of the trench, surrounded by at least four post-holes, this is known as Hut 2. The hut was sunk into Roman layers and the associated pottery dated to the 7th century AD. A 22cm occupation layer covered the area of the hut containing potery, charcoal and burnt daub. Near the NE corner was a scoop full of burnt daub and earth and many ox bone fragments, this was pobably a post hole. Near the east side of the hut was a small circular Anglo-Saxon pit, filled with 'dark earth'
A comb with Frisian characteristics was also found in the occupation layer. The floor overlay a brown pebbly soil containing charcoal and oyster shell and possibly representing an earlier phase of occupation.
