Summary

Post-medieval Brickworks near Darland marked on the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey map (c.1905-1922). This brickworks was extended from an earlier brickfield shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (c.1858-1873). Evidence for quarrying and structures associated with the brickworks was identified during an evaluation in 2018.

Full Description

OS map 3rd edition(1910) shows darland brickworks extended from earlier brickfield shown on 1st edition (Sheet 19) 1865 (1)

Evidence for quarrying and structures associated with the brickworks was identified during an evaluation in 2018. The features identified comprised poured concrete slabs and several walls which formed the floors of structures of workshops and drying areas, alongside cuts representing quarry pits or wash-back ponds for storage of the clay mixture.
