Full Description

Reference from Archaeological Survey: "Working horse stable. Mid 18th century-early 19th with later additions, a late 19th wagon shed on the front. Stable is weatherboarded timber frame on English Bond red brick footings and now has a corrugated iron roof. Built on a rough southwest-northeast axis and against the northeast end of the barn it backs onto the lane and faces into the former rickyard. Northeast end to farm entrance and rear wall with canted corner so that wagons could turn into the farmyard. Roof is hipped this end. Remains of crosswall divide building into 2 roughly equal stables. Front apparenyl symmentrical with each stabel having central doorway (right one with early, if not original -2-flap door and overlight with grille; left one enlarged in 20th). Each has a small unglazed window next crosswall. Left stable has similar hatch in end wall. Framing includes reused timbers. 6 bays of relatively stout scantling with straight tension braces. Towards northeast end there are curving tension braces and arch braces to ties which may suggest that stable made by enlarging an older building. Crosswall has remnants of boarded cladding. Later (probably clasping the purlins. Lean to wagon shed added to rear and 20th 5-bay open-fronted cartshed (clad in corrugated iron monopitch roof) built onto front." (1)
