Full Description

Across the other side of a Roman street to the north-west of the Roman Theatre lay a large precinct surrounded by masonry walls on four sides with a colonnaded portico 3m wide which lined it. This was the site of the Temple Precinct which was contemporary with the first theatre and public baths, it had a long life. Its interior courtyard was resurfaced up to six times over two centuries. Disrepair and robbing littered the fourth century surface with over a thousand pieces of imported marble fragments. Mouldings, venneers, Corinthian capitals and a large fluted column shaft suggests that a classical temple was locacated within the precint, however, no physical trace of the classical temple has been found to date. Also a lined fountain base was placed on the central theatr axis A wooden Celtic shrine was evident in one corner and other shrines may have stood here too.

Some time during the fourth century the precincts were turned into a market place, seeing the shrine and colonnade demolished.
