Full Description
Excavations in the vicinity of Slatters Hotel Yard and NE of Gravel Walk have revealed aspects of a Roman Masonry Building of late second to early fourth century date (c. AD 175 - 300/320). The structure, which had masonry walls and floors, measured some 24.6m square and had at least ten rooms. A single storey building may be indicated by the dwarf nature of the foundations, however several phases of building are represented.
The plan indicates a town-house with two wings and a corridor bounding a central courtyard which faced onto the street frontage. There were a range of rooms behind the corridor and an open area to the north-west.
