Between 1946 and 1948 excavations by The Canterbury Excavation Committee in the yard of the Rose Hotel (now the rear of 6-6A Rose Lane).
The excavations uncovered part of a masonry building probably erected at the beginning of the third century on the site of a late first or early second-century building. The main later building had five of its rooms excavated. The external walls and one internal wall were built of substantial flints and mortar, with tile quoins, on gravel footings; other internal walls were represented by slots for timber partitions. There were indications that a corridor bounded the rooms to the south-east. Other buildings, some earlier, lay immediately to the NE and NW of the house.
The buildings were covered by thick deposits of late or sub-Roman 'dark earth' yielding much late fourth century pottery.
