Between 1979 and 1982 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated within the Poor Priests Hospital at 20a and 21a Stour Street. The work was undertaken prior to the building being converted to a Museum and was funded by Canterbury City Council.

In 1982 the chapel and a small service area to the north west of the chapel was investigated. Roman levels were encountered in this stage of the excavation. A major Roman street was uncovered at the east end of the chapel in the area of 14th century Sacristy. The road consisted of a 1.25m thick deposit of layered gravel with at least 8 metallings. The road was aligned roughly NE/SW is though to flank the NW side of a collonaded enclosure seen in previous excavations (Cake Bread Robey). Possible courtyard metallings of Roman date were uncovered in the south west corner of the chapel and also to the NW of the chapel. Both the road and the courtyard were sealed by alluvium which yielded early Saxon pottery.
