Full Description

Between 1951 and 1953 a number of trenches were dug on the east side of Canterbury Lane by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. The trenches were labelled CXX, CXXI, CXXII, CXXIV Site C and followed an earlier excavation in 1949.
Cellar CI lying north to the area investigated in 1949 revealed late Roman levels and the remains of earlier Roman buildings. Further trenches between these two areas revealed the remains of a 15th century chalk block house overlain by an 18th century house. Trench C IV was dug from the surface between cellars a produced a fine series of stratified layers extending from the 2nd to the 20th centuries. Trench CII was dug to the far west of the site and proved to have been much disturbed by Medieval pits was did reveal a 14th century well at the bottom of which were found almost 100 pitchers. Trenches C V A-D, to the east of this trench, revealed more of the Roman buildings. The last area to be investigate, C VI, was excavated south west of Trench CII revealed 0. 23m of late Roman black earth beneath which was a cobbled floor.
The earliest archaeological levels were reached only in Trench C XV N and Trenches CIII, C V C and C V D. The natural brickearth was seen to be sealed by a layer of loamy soil exactly similar to the pre-Roman plough-soil found on the west of Canterbury lane. Above this lay successive deposits asssociated with Roman buildings.
