Full Description
In 1960 excavations were undertaken in the yard of the former Simon Langton School by The Canterbuy Excavation Committee. The site was coded CXXXI and CXXXIIS. The site lay within the precincts of the pre-Reformation Austin Friary, but few remains of this period were found. The most important discoveries were those of a Roman street and of six Anglo-Saxon huts of the sixth and seventh centuries which lay in the demolished remains of a Roman building lying NW of the street. The latter was a continuation of the NE to SW sreet found on Site CXVR, but on the present site there was a greatly reduced thickness of metalling. Natural brickearth below the street, sloping up towards the SE, lay at 13.1m OD, only 1.8m below the modern surface and it was clear that both in Roman and in post-Roman times the normal thick build-up of successive structures was absent. In both periods this may have been the result of the peripheral position of the site.
