Full Description
In summer 1947 The Canterbury Excavation Committee excavated in two cellars on the west side of Canterbury Lane. The trenches were coded CX H and M. In trench CXH a Roman SE to NE street was revealed, this was seen again in April 1949 in Area R to the west. The street covered the whole of the northern part of the trench, and proved to have been relaid at least 3 times. The south side of the street was bordered by a timber building, marked by foundation trench into which were cut four post holes and possibly dating to around 190-220 AD. An earlier occupation deposit also indicated an earlier structure on the site, erected about the middle of the 2nd century AD.
In summer 1949 a large area between Iron Bar Lane and Canterbury Lane was mechanically cleared and investigated by the Canterbury Excavation Committee, it was known as CXV Area R.
The main feature uncovered was a length of NE to SW oriented Roman street measuring 12.2m; this was joined at right angles to the SE by a further street. The main street was laid down in the mid first century and was resurfaced at least 9 times, gaining a more NE course during its lifespan. The intersecting street was constructed later than the former, during the first half of the second century, and lay over a plough soil. It was subsequently resurfaced at least 4 times. To the NW of the former street a part of a Roman building was revealed in trench R I, it had been erected during the first half of the second century and had a lifespan of 110-220 AD. Evidence for the building included a wall with painted plaster. These streets may eventually have fallen into disuses in the fifth century and a two-period timber hut was built over their intersection.
In 1998 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated upon the site of 23 St George's Street after undertaking an initial evaluation. The site was machine cleared to a set level and then hand cleaned by archaeologists. This procedure revealed in section, the Roman Road first seen by the Canterbury Excavation Committee in post-war excavations in the vicinity. On the east side of the road, which was aligned roughly north/south, were traces of timber and stone buildings, containing intact sequences of clay floors and opus signiunum, dating to the Roman period.
