Full Description

In summer 1947 the Canterbury Excavation Commmittee dug four trenches on the site of 23 St George's Street. The site was coded C X G.
The excavations revealed the north west wall of the northern wing of a Roman apsed building (excavated further in 1949 as site CXV S and T). Trenches III, IV and V must have lain within the northern room of the building, but the area had been much disturbed by the cellar builders and no floor levels remained. The only features to survive were pits, containing Roman pottery sherds. The building is believed to have been erected c. 240-250 and occupation continued well into the fourth century. The function of the building is difficult to establish, but it may have been a large town house.

In 1949 The Canterbury Excavation Committee excavated the basements of 30, 32, and 34 St George's Street. These sites were coded CXV cellars S, T and V.
The most significant discovery in this area was a building with an east apsidal end. It was built in the 3rd century on the site of a previous timber building and had remained in occupation until late in 4th century. The north west wall of the building's north wing had been seen in a previous excavation in 1947 and subsequent service trenches revealed further portions of other wings.

In Summer 1949 The Canterbury Excavation Committee excavated within two cellars on the south west side of St George's Street. The sites were coded CXV S and T.
These excavations revealed two Roman pits dating to first half of the 2nd century AD. Towards the turn of that century there was the first evidence for occupation of the site with traces of a timber building found, erected c. 200 and demolished before 250 AD. At about this time an apsed building was constructed on the site the remains of which have been much disturbed by modern cellars. The walls were of mortar and flint and the building probably fell into ruin in the late fourth century. Five rooms of the building were uncovered which was oriented roughly SE and NW with the apse at the NE end. The building measured at least 33.5m by 26.8m and its function was probably as a large town house fronting one of the main streets of the city.
The destruction layers of the apsd building were sealed by deposits of late Roman and early Medieval dark earth cut by pits, thought to date to the 13th century.

In 1999 (?) The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated on a site to the north of St George's Street, to the left of St George's Clocktower. The work was funded by Land Securities Plc. And was part of the redevelopment of the Whitefrairs area. The excavation revealed parts of the apisidal Roman buiding, revealed in previous work in the area. Later sub-Roman buildings were also seen.
