Full Description
In July 1983 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated on land adjacent to 3 Marlowe Avenue, fronting onto St John's Lane. The work was in advance of redevelopment and the sitecode was SJL83 (also known as MAVII83).
The excavation area was confined to three half cellars belonging to a row of 19th century cottages which had been demolished over a decade earlier.
All of the existing horizontal Roman deposits were cut by an EW aligned wall foundation, the west end of which had been removed by later features. The wall was almost certainly Roman in date and was perpendicular to the Roman street, possibly representing a building wall fronting the street.
This foundation may also relate to those found adjacent in 1868 by Pilbrow.
