A Roman wall/foundation was observed by Pilbrow in 1868 during new sewer installation in St. John's Lane. "In St. John's Lane were found several small coins and pieces of pottery, and at the upper part the foundation of a building; also a pice of deer's horn. There was a great diversity of soil throughout the higher part of this lane." Here three parallel walls ran across the line of the street. A fourth wall joined the north-western pair.

These foundations may be associated with a Roman wall found in 1983 (Andrews Site 240) in the cellars of 5-7 St. John's Lane.
