Full Description

An observation was made in April 1977 (?) during the mechanical excavation of a sewer service trench to connect the site of No 77 Castle Street with the main sewer in Castle Street. The location of the trench was under the pavement frontage in front of no 77 Castle Street.

A previously unknown Roman building containing a hypocaust was observed and recorded. The badly robbed foundations of a possible internal wall aligned north-west to south-west was flanked to the north-east by the remaining traces of at least three pilae stacks. The Roman building was considered to be located immediately to the south-west of the Roman theatre.

Part of a hypocausted room, found during service trenching east of No ? [no 77??], Castle Street, may have been part of a building complex associated with the Roman theatre or an independent structure built when the theatre was reconstructed. Within the service trench, a rough opus signinum floor, supporting at least four closely-set pilae, was observed and recorded 0.79cm below the pavement frontage of Castle Street. A 3cm thick deposit of black carbon sealed the floor and abutted the single-tile remains of the pilae stacks. The pilae and layer of carbon were in turn covered by a 30cm thick deposit of demolition debris. The fragmentary remains of a wall, robbed to the level of the opus signinum floor, and aligned roughly north-west to south-east, flanked the south side of the service trench.
