Monument record TR 15 NW 2034 - Roman Building in Temple Precinct, south of Stour Street

Summary

The remains of a small, rectangular timber-framed building was located on the site. This was possibly one of a number of shrines in the enclosure as well as a major classical temple. The building was built when the enclosure was first laid out and was probably demolished in the 3rd century, at a time when the porticoes also seem to have been partly dismantled and courtyards laid over them.

Full Description

In 1980 and 1981 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated on adjacent sites at 69a Stour Street and Adelaide Place. The sitecodes were CB/RIV and CB/RV.
The excavation revealed a number of Roman features and deposits. Extending over both sites was a well-defined constrcution horizon associated with the laying out of a huge colonnaded enclosure, possibly belonging to a temple. Both the stylobate and outer temenos wall robber trenches were found on CB/RV, while only the stylobate robber trench was seen within CB/RIV.
Three sides of this enclosure have now been found during a variety of excavations. No sign of mortar or durable floors survived within the portico, yet in each case a thick deposit of brickearth sealed the construction horizon. This deposits contained 1st century material and was capped by rough metallings containing 4th century material. It seems plausible that the portico was paved with stone slabs which were later robbed. At least two phases of stylobate gutter were excavated as well a sequence of courtyard metallings.
The remains of a small, rectangular timber-framed building was located on the CB/RV site. This was possibly one of a number of shrines in the enclosure as well as a major classical temple. The building had been built when the enclosure was first laid out and was probably demolished in the 3rd century, at a time when the porticoes also seem to have been partly dismantled and a final sequence of courtyards laid over them.
Occupaton continued well into the 5th century, a remarkable find was a group burial dating to this time found on CB/RV. However similar late Roman or Saxon levels were not found on CB/RIV. Instead a thick deposit of possible agricultural soil was found, a black-brown loam containing post-Conquest material. The robbing of the Roman walls is believed to have taken place in 12th century.
