Full Description
A large section of the late third century Roman defensive City Wall runs between Burgate and Queningate.
In 1935 The Canterbury Archaeological Society excavated upon the site of the north wall of St Michaels Church within the Cathedral Precincts. Considerable parts of the foundation of the church were exposed, dating to the 13-14th centuries. Towards the city wall medieval and Samian pottery had been found. Towards the north of the site a masonry footing, apparently of Roman date, had been unearthed.
In 1934 Excavations were undertaken beneath the City Wall in the vicinity of 15, The Precincts, Canterbury Cathedral by The Canterbury Archaeological Society.
According to Dorothy Gardiner there were 'no very decisive results'. (1-3)
The town wall is described as being built in 279 AD and enclosing an area of around 130 acres. (4)
A large defensive ditch is associated with the wall (TR 15 NW 1975). (5)
