Full Description

Stone foundations, Roman coin, potsherds and silver crucifix from Dartford. "On lowering the point where Park place now stands about 7 ft. for building" stone foundations between 3 and 4 ft. thick, "and various small diaper foundations as if they had been cells" were seen. "One floor of plaster was firm as stone until exposed to the air, when it became soft as ashes. On this lay a coin of Agrippa, about the size of a penny piece. In the above cells were many broken urns, of very rude workmanship and various forms." Pieces of green glazed pottery were also found and, on a gravelled path in front of the foundations, a silver crucifix. [An account, in part, by Mr. Landale of West Hill, Dartford, at the time owner of East Hill field, (site of the Roman Burial Ground, see TQ 57 SW 9) of discoveries during trenching operations there about 1822.] (1) From the evidence [ ref. to (1) ] it is impossible to be certain that the foundations were Roman. (2) Nothing from this site is held by Dartford Museum. TQ 5459 7393. Here is sited modern private residence standing upon the site of Park place, and retaining the name. Foundations of the old house are still visible. Finds listed by Authority 2 sited to this spot. Find spot surveyed on to 25" AM. (3)
