Full Description
A watching brief was made during June 1951 when commercial excavations were undertaken at the site of Hallets Garage, at the SW end of Station Road West.
Two inhumation burials were recorded close together and side by side with the heads to the SW. No trace of coffins was found nor any grave goods accompanying the burials. Two pits were also recorded, one containing 1st century pottery, and the other a large fragment of quern stone of Andernach lava. These are all thought to be Roman in date due to the level of the contemporary ground surface. The owner of the garage, Marcel Hallett, also reported that other human remains had been found beneath his workshop nearer to the railway, presumably on the west side of Station Road West. (1, 2)
