Monument record TR 15 NE 1512 - Roman road metalling, St. John's Hospital, Northgate

Summary

A gravel filled hollow, between 2.1m-1.7m below the modern surface, just entered within the SW half of this face and may have represented Roman road metallings within a flanking ditch or hollow way. Above this lay several cobbled and gravel surfaces three of which, at about 1m, 0.45m and 0.3m below the current road, appeared to contain much crushed mortar.

Full Description

A Watching Brief was commissioned by the Trustees of St John's Hospital during site clearance and construction work. The watching brief was undertaken intermittently from March to October 1999 and the sitecode was SJH99.

On 20th October, a 2.10m square pit, 2.95m deep, was cut into Sturry Road, 1.5m out from the NW kerb. Although here was much disturbance from pre-existing services, an impressive sequence of road surfaces survived, particularly in the SE face of the cutting, overlying grey natual clays.
