Full Description

An evaluation was commissioned by Reject China Shops Ltd in advance of the proposed lowering of the basement of no 14 High Street during the refitting of Reject China Shop's premises. The evaluation was carried out in February, 1986.

Two evaluation trenches were cut into the basement of the shop to establish the depth of existing cellar walls and also to locate the position of a main sewer in the basement area. The existing brick floor of the cellar sealed a deposit of demolition debris mixed with loam, which was 50cm (500mm) in depth. These layers sealed Roman Forum courtyard deposits. During an early phase of the evaluation, the main walls of the existing buildings were revealed to be shallow-founded, and as a consequence, the scheme to lower the basement was abandoned. Only the surface of the latest courtyard was thus exposed.
