Summary

Roman/medieval road metalling was also observed and recorded. These road metallings were observed to be heavily compacted and possibly four or more metallings were visible. A ditch, drain or pit was also observed and recorded. This feature was seen to cut a waterlogged deposit, and the Roman road metalling was observed to have subsided into the feature.

Full Description

A watching brief was carried out in April, 1977 during the excavation of a gas pipe trench located at the junction of Northgate (adjacent to no 72 Northgate) and St Radigunds Street. The watching brief was located approximately 20m NE of the city walls. Several observations were made and recorded during the excavation of the pipe trench:-

Roman/medieval road metalling was also observed and recorded. These road metallings were observed to be heavily compacted and possibly four or more metallings were visible.

A ditch, drain or pit was also observed and recorded. This feature was seen to cut a waterlogged deposit, and the Roman road metalling was observed to have subsided into the ditch/drain/pit. The fill of this feature contained a certain amount of gravel, as well as a bull's skull and a buckle.
