Full Description
A watching brief was carried out in the spring of 1979 following the discovery of five Roman pots, including two large jars which had probably contained cremation burials, by contractors cutting a foundation pit for a new petrol pump at the 'Invicta' Service Station (Esso), located at nos 116 to 190, Wincheap.
The pots were closely grouped in the north-west corner of the foundation trench, but as they had been removed and emptied by the contractors' staff, it was impossible to judge whether there was one burial or two. The presence of two large jars (which may have contained cremations) in the group did strongly suggest, however, two adjacent burials. The pottery group was dated originally approximately to the first half of the second century AD, but a revised approximate date for the pots has now been given to the late second to early third century AD.
