Summary

The compact metalled surface of a Roman street, south side, was located on Burgate Street. This was interpreted as part of a street running in through the Burgate to join the main street that was aligned across the city from the West Gate. Full Description

An observation was made in the summer of 1981. An opportunity arose for a brief investigation of the stratification beneath the cellar floor of no 68, Burgate Street during building work. The compact metalled surface of a Roman street, south side, was located. This was interpreted as part of a street running in through the Burgate to join the main street that was aligned across the city from the West Gate.

The compacted metalled surface of a Roman street was located beneath the cellar floor of No 68 Burgate (TR 15215774. Deduced from OS 1:1250 1972) by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1981. This was interpreted as part of a street running in through Burgate to join the main street running across the city from the West Gate. (1)
