Full Description
An observation was made in the summer of 1981. An opportunity arose for a brief investigation of the stratification beneath the cellar floor of no 68, Burgate Street during building work. The compact metalled surface of a Roman street, south side, was located. This was interpreted as part of a street running in through the Burgate to join the main street that was aligned across the city from the West Gate.
Description from record TR 15 NE 121:
The compacted metalled surface of a Roman street was located beneath the cellar floor of No 68 Burgate (TR 15215774. Deduced from OS 1:1250 1972) by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1981. This was interpreted as part of a street running in through Burgate to join the main street running across the city from the West Gate. (1)
