Full Description
During repairs and modifications to no 7 Palace Street, the large cellar under the premises was lowered by approximately 0.45m. This resulted in a salvage excavation in 1982, the site code was 7PS83.
The cutting of the original cellar had removed most of the post-Roman and some of the late Roman levels. The earlier Roman levels consisted of the verge of a major north-east to south-west aligned Roman street (leading directly to Northgate) and the remains of at least one Roman timber building. This building, dated mid to late 2nd century, produced evidence for possible metalworking activity.
