Full Description
A continuation of the sewer tunnel that commenced earlier in 1982 under parts of the Parade and St George's Street was continued during November and December, 1982. The tunnel was driven NW under the Parade and the High Street to the intersection with Guidhall Street, by D. Justice Ltd, entailing a further watching brief.
Eight Roman walls, a drain and the southernmost end of the St George's Street Roman bath-house were cut through and recorded during the first stage of tunnelling. A further sixteen walls, a major Roman street and a metalled area, possibly a courtyard, were truncated and recorded during the cutting of the second stage of the sewer tunnel. The walls and extensive courtyard metallings discovered during the excavation of the sewer tunnel were interpreted as possibly part of the the Roman forum complex.
A possible colonnade is also recorded at the site alongside 6 occupation surfaces and floors. (2)
