Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken during the cutting of a service trench in St Dunstan's Churchyard in March 1984. The trench was located to the west of the churchyard and was excavated on a sloping gradient from a new church hall to a maximum depth of 3m at the intersection with London Road.

A thick deposit of Roman street metalling was exposed immediately south of and partially beneath the modern London Road. South of the Roman street a layer, 0.8m thick, was located of dark brown silty brickearth flecked with carbon and burnt clay and though to be Roman. However no contemporary burials were located or features were seen. Roman pot sherds were recovered from this deposit. The Roman level was sealed by a complex sequence of soil deposits associated with the development of the St Dunstan's cemetery, thought to have been established in the 11th century.
