Full Description

Monitoring of trenches excavated for the installation of a new mains sewer in the St Dunstan's area was undertaken in October and November, 1985. The work was funded by Canterbury City Council. Only scatters of worn and abraded Roman sherds were recovered from the greater part of the new trench and the stratification indicated that much of the area cut through by the trench was open agricultural land from the Roman period to the mid nineteenth century AD.

The remains of 4 Roman cremation burials were truncated by the trench opposite 5-7 New Street. This is an area known to contain burials. Finds included a complete lamp filler.
