Full Description

Monitoring of a deep trench excavated to form a new stair-well giving access to the basement of No 6, Mercery Lane was carried out in March, 1986.

The trench cut through the rammed gravel metallings of a major NE to SW aligned Roman street. The surface of the latest street, located 1.4m below the existing surface of the Buttermarket was sealed by demolition debris, presumably from a nearby late Roman building.
The levels sealing these deposits were extensively disturbed by 18th to 20th century service trenches. The primary Roman street which overlay pre-and early Roman topsoil deposits was capped by at least 9 individual remetallings: a total street
thickness of 0.70m.
