Full Description
A watching brief was undertaken at no 7 New Street in spring 1987 during the lowering of the front and rear cellars.
The work was commenced without prior consultation and archaeological involvement was soon required when three graves, dating to the Roman period, were located. One of the graves was the upper part of an inhumation, the lower part of which had been recorded in 8 New Street in 1978. The lower legs and feet of a second inhumation were uncovered together with a pair of hobnail soles. The third grave was not excavated as it underlay a load bearing wall. 3 deep, square-cut pits, contemporary with the graves, were also recorded, their function as yet unknown.
