Full Description

A recorded observations was made in March, 1989 following the excavation of foundation trenches for a single storey extension at the rear of no 18, Castle Street.

A complex sequence of intercutting Medieval and post-Medieval pits, including two brick-lined soakaways, was recorded. Natural brickearth, observed approximately 1.65m below the existing ground level, was capped by a sequence of burnt and unburnt clay floors that had a total depth of 0.30m. These floors were associated with a Roman timber building. Roman pottery dated to the 1st- to 3d-centuries AD was also found within the spoil excavated from the foundation trenches, suggesting that a Roman structure existed in the area of the observations.
