Summary

The excavation of a foundation trench against the western side of the proposed residential housing scheme exposed a complete Nene Valley colour-coated beaker, dated from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. The beaker indicated the presence of a Roman cremation burial, but was recovered not from a burial context, but from the bucket of the mechanical excavator.

Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken in August, 1993 during the construction of three houses at no 66, London Road, formerly the site of St Dunstan's primary school. The site code was LDR93.

The excavation of a foundation trench against the western side of the proposed residential housing scheme exposed a complete Nene Valley colour-coated beaker, dated from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. The beaker indicated the presence of a Roman cremation burial, but was recovered not from a burial context, but from the bucket of the mechanical excavator. No traces of the cremation or other associated funerary vessels were located in the sides of the excavated trench.
