Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken at no 19, Stour Street in 1991during the underpinning of the east wall.

A total of 23 contrators trenches were excavated throughout the building to facilitate the underpinning, two were filled with concrete prior to the arrival of archaeological observers. Because of the nature of the work the remaining trenches were recorded in section only. The lowest stratum recorded was the metalling of a Roman road. On the northern edge of the metalling was evidence for a robbed out retaining wall along with a drain crossing diagonally across the roads surface. The metalling was capped by layers of alluvium suggesting a flood episode.
