Full Description

A watching brief was carried out at No. 5 Rhodaus Town in October 1999 when three engineering test pits were excavated in advance of a proposed building. The site code was RHT99.

Natural gravels overlain by brickearth formed the subsoils in each pit. A grave was found cutting the brickearth in the central pit, aligned with the skeleton's head to the east and probably lying on its left side. The upper fill of the grave contained several sherds of 1st to 2nd century AD pottery and was sealed by post-Medieval ploughsoil. In the southern pit the brickearth was sealed by a similar ploughsoil overlain by an organic deposit, probably manure and make-up deposits capped by a chalk floor, probably for a late post-Medieval granary, buried under modern levelling deposits.
