Monument record TR 15 NW 2106 - Roman City Wall, St. George's Terrace

Summary

The final depth reached during the clearance was 1.83m from datum, corresponding with the current ground level on the outside of the wall. Above this level the core of the wall was very badly constructed, the flints being sparsely set with mortar, almost air spaced in fact.

Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Frank Jenkins in May 1950 when a large bomb crater was cleared on the line of the city wall c. 25 yards NE of the Riding Gate.

The final depth reached during the clearance was 1.83m from datum, corresponding with the current ground level on the outside of the wall. Above this level the core of the wall was very badly constructed, the flints being sparsely set with mortar, almost air spaced in fact. Below this, however, it was very solidly built and compares favourably with the Roman work revealed by the excavations carried out by Mr Sheppard Frere, just south of the Riding Gate. Samples of the mortar were taken at each 30cm level and it is evident that those from the lower levels differ from those taken higher up and it is possible that the lower courses represent original Roman work.
Jenkins proposes to have the mortar analised, it is not yet known if the results of this analysis exist in the archive material.
