Full Description
During 1998 and 1999, an archaeological watching brief was conducted during the construction of phase 1 of a new Education centre which straddles the former entrance to South Close in the precincts of Christchurch Cathedral, Canterbury and the site code was CSC98.
The clearance of the Organists cellar exposed the natural brickearth. This was overlain by Roman topsoil and features including a possible quarry, ditches, hearth and possible building traces, as well as clay floors. Levelling deposits overlay these. The levelling deposits were cut by features which may have been Saxon, including a possible sunken featured building.
