Full Description

One of at least two large mounds within the vicinity of the Canterbury East Station, partially destroyed by levelling prior to the construction of a building for St Mary Bredin's School, and perhaps represented today by a slight rise in ground level at the Pavillion Garage. A Roman cremation burial was discovered in the mound, which was formerly an orchard, during the levelling operation. The observer records 'on inspection of the mound raised over the place of the interment, I found it to contain many fragments of brick, pottery, oyster-shells and animal bones'.

The eastern part of the site (the fomer garage site) was examined during geotechnical works in 2013 and 2014. The excavators concluded "The mound on which part of the PDA stands is expected to be of Roman or early Norman origin and, in either case, almost certainly formed part of an early Norman defensive work with a moat passing under and south of the garage forecourt and shop. At least one fill of this moat contained evidence for iron-working. This part of the site may also have been quarried for brickearth and, perhaps, gravel before and/or after the moat was cut" (1)
