Full Description

During the reconstruction of the Cathedral's Victorian Library the foundations of a Roman Street were observed, by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. The trench was oriented NE SW and was dug in November 1951. The depth of the trench was 4ft below the floor level of the vaults belonging to the Great Dormitory of Lanfranc. This revealed a section of the road which was 20ft wide between its tailed off edges and more than 3ft thick at its cambered centre. This is now proved to be part of a Roman street which runs under the site of the Bell Harry Tower in an approximately NE SW direction across the city. Under the edge of the metalling on the westerly side of the street a samian ware Drag. Form 33 base stamped BIGA FEC was found.
