Full Description
During the building of Parkside primary school in 1949 a quantity of Roman pottery was discovered, prompting excavation by CAS. A Romano-British Kiln was revealed of the up-draught type, built of clay and situated in a 4ft diameter pit. A short trench connected the pit with a stoke hole. About one third of the dome survived. Portions of the clay floor of the oven were found in the layer of black ash in the stoke hole, but there were no indications that a central column had stood in the oven to support it. Therefore, it was assumed that the floor was supported upon a timber framework which had been destroyed when the firing took place. Wasters were found in the debris and it is thought that the kiln was in use in the late 1st-early 2nd century date.
